Junior Gliding

At our club we are very proud to have inspired and trained many junior pilots over the years… See if we can get you started too!

Glider flying is a fantastic activity for young people, and the Devon and Somerset Gliding Club offers a safe and exciting way to get started. Unlike powered planes, gliders rely on natural forces like rising air currents, so kids quickly learn about science, weather, and how flight really works. It’s a hands-on way to explore physics and geography while having an unforgettable adventure in the sky.

Flying also helps build confidence and responsibility. At the Devon and Somerset Gliding Club, young pilots are guided by experienced instructors who teach them not only how to fly but also how to make good decisions and stay safe. Many teenagers are surprised at how quickly they can take control of the aircraft, which gives them a real sense of achievement and independence.

Beyond the thrill, gliding creates a strong sense of community. The Devon and Somerset Gliding Club is a place where young people meet new friends, learn from skilled mentors, and spend time outdoors in a supportive environment. For some, it can even be the first step toward a future career in aviation. Most of all, it’s about the joy and freedom of soaring through the sky like a bird!

Devon and Somerset Gliding Club (DSGC) actively encourages young people to take up the sport of gliding, pilot training can start from as young as 12 or 13 years.

The Club is recognised by the British Gliding Association as a Junior Gliding Centre, providing a safe and enjoyable atmosphere where young people (over 14years) can learn to fly gliders, with DBS checked instructors and following established Child Protection guidelines.

The Club offers special discounted rates for those under 21years,  or under 25 years and still in full-time education. There are several national organisations that provide scholarships or bursaries to help with training expenses for young people.

Locally the Ian Beckett Fund supports junior members with specific aims.

Alongside the Club fleet, there is a Ka6cr glider that is funded by DSGC Charitable Trust for Junior members to fly at reduced rates.

Some of our young pilots have been supported to compete in National Competitions like Enterprise and the Junior Nationals. Some have progressed to become commercial airline pilots or gliding instructors, and are active in promoting the club to young people.

They have been supported by:

BGA Launchpoint Charitable Trust (incorporating  Caroline Trust & Ted Lys Trust)
Royal Aeronautical Society Centennial Scholarship Fund,
Honourable Company of Air Pilots
British Women Pilots Association
Royal Aero Club Trust.

If you are under 18 years old you will need the permission of your parent or guardian.
